The business is spearheaded by Rochelle Collins who has so much to share about how her business came to be and what her future plans are.
How long have you been in business? Kind Kravings opened Earth Day of 2015 which was roughly 14 months ago.
What do you love most about being your own boss? I have never been one that takes being told what to do at all, so besides the government, owning my own business takes that out of the equation. Mostly, I love that I can impact the world however I see fit, and I like that I am not working for someone else’s bottom dollar at the end of the day. I also believe this country needs to bring back local small businesses because we have handed the power over to corporations and I for one have not appreciated the direction that has taken this country or the planet as a whole.
What makes Wichita so special? Wichita is a blank slate. The fact that there is not much but industrial/manufacturing jobs means there is a market and potential for so much more culture here. I grew up here so besides my travels this is all I know. I like the size of Wichita and it is pretty clean as a city.
Have you always wanted to own your own business? No, I have not. In fact, I never put much thought into what I “wanted” to do per say. I just knew what I DIDN’T want to do which was work for someone else or work a desk job.
For someone visiting Wichita, what is the one must see? The Keeper of The Plains. That is a really cool art piece with good history and meaning.
What is your favorite local restaurant? Passage to India, hands down! I love indian food it is one of my favorite so Passage obviously is on my list, but as far as another rest. that i can get behind on what they are doing and accomplishing it is Beautiful Day Cafe. I love the owners and their business model. They are doing it right with organic farm to table and we support them as much as possible!
Do you see yourself opening other locations? Kind Kravings is just a stepping stool to something much greater. We have no plans to open future locations but more so to expand upon the concept we have already started. We are open to any and all possibilities because that is what makes the future special is anything can happen, but we would ideally like to keep our focus on quality over quantity and multiple locations would likely pull our attention in to many different directions, diluting the experience.
Why do your customers to stay or do repeat business with you? Honestly, this question is pretty deep for me but I can probably sum it up a bit. I think we are in a time and place where people are resonating with the message and the meaning behind Kind Kravings. We strive to connect with the community on a person to person basis, because each one of us matters and we whole heartedly care about every person we serve, people are NOT a number or a dollar sign.
We aim to make the connection between what we put in our bodies and it’s impact on our health, environment, and animals. I think people are waking up to the importance of a clean food supply and will logically seek out those providing that. Our food is not processed pre packaged dead food, it is whole foods created by the touch of the human spirit and provided by the earth in its purest form we can find today, which is organic and non gmo.
Of course, we can not leave out one of the most important facts to touch on here and that is our food is simply AMAZING!! There is a reason your grandmother’s cooking was the best, it was made with love from scratch and that is exactly what I had in mind when we decided to open Kind Kravings. We wanted to make home cooked meals readily available or more convenient in our fast paced society because fast food is killing our nation so clearly there is a need for convenience but in a much more healthier and sustainable fashion. Our food is an art form to us. Creating dishes completely from scratch without the use of harmful ingredients and utilizing spices, herbs, seasonings, and cooking techniques to create incredible flavor versus achieving it through the use of high salt, sugar, and fats to do so.
To what do you attribute your success? Besides those in my life like mom, dad, and grandmother who taught me a thing or two about cooking and the importance of the dinner table. Simply following my heart has always been and always will be the path to success because to me it can only be found through happiness and nourishing souls is what makes me feel happy.
What do you look for in an employee? I can tell everything I need to about someone through the way they choose to treat their bodies, the environment, and the innocent/weak (animals, children, elders) If there is a lack of respect in any of those areas you probably won’t be suitable for Kind Kravings mission. We believe in living our truth and those on our team must also do the same.
What is unique about your business? We are a vegan organic non gmo comfort food, food truck in the heart of beef country… need i say more?
What are your responsibilities as the business owner? EVERYTHING! Bookkeeping, social media and internet, inventory, supply purchasing, cooking, serving, menu development, etc. Yes, we are growing and will need to expand on help in the near future because it is a HUGE responsibility.
