How long have you been in business? “Get Air Wichita opened May 2, 2014

What do you love most about being your own boss? “We love the trampoline business.

What makes Wichita so special? “We are not from Wichita and didn’t know what to expect. When we came there we to open the park we simply fell in love with the city. The people are amazing, so friendly and helpful. We have enjoyed being in your city so much. It’s a jewel.

Have you always wanted to own your own business? ” All of the owners of Get Air Trampoline parks are entrepreneurs, so yes.

For someone visiting Wichita, what is the one must see? “We loved going to the old town. Wichita just has that old West feel that makes you feel nostalgic about our country in general.”

What is your favorite local restaurant? Redrock Canyon Grill.

Do you see yourself opening other locations? “Yes, we are opening several more in the US and are looking at Norway, Finland, and Denmark right now.

Why do your customers to stay or do repeat business with you? “We have state of the art tumbling trampolines which are unique to the industry. Our company is the leader in trampoline safety. We want people to have fun and be safe at the same time.

To what do you attribute your success? “Would have to say it’s because we care about our customers. We’ve put a lot of thought into the design of our parks, and Wichita is a classic example of our layout. You walk in the door and it’s a wow factor. You can see the entire layout. And the layout is wow wow wow, with long tumbling tramps which are both fun and a lot safer than little itty bitty squares that you see in our competitors’ parks

What do you look for in an employee? “We want people who are responsible, responsive, attentive, mature, and polite.

What is unique about your business? “Everyone loves to jump. We offer kids and adults and opportunity to have fun, blow off steam and get exercise at the same time. It’s a total three-fer.

What are your responsibilities as the business owner? “Making sure that the trampolines are in top repair, the park is clean, the jump guards are being attentive and taking care of the customers. And smiling at how much fun everyone is having!

Connie’s Cookies

CONNIE’S COOKIES

13011 E. 21st Street Wichita, KS 67230 • Monday thru Friday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Saturday: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM; Sunday: Closed • Website

Since 1989, Connie’s Cookies has been a household name in Wichita for almost every occasion. They specialize in scrumptious, personalized cookies and have expanded to also include cupcakes, cakes, brownies, macaroons even candies. Their great tasting cookies are sure to make you fall in love with every bite.

We had the pleasure of talking to Rob Smith, the second-generation owner of this cookie empire dominating Wichita. We are happy to have learned more about how this business came to be. Read along.

How long have you been in business? Connie’s Cookies was started in Wichita approximately 30 years ago, by Connie Hamilton, we are a small family business that is now in its second generation of ownership, currently owned and operated by my wife and I, Robert & Tanya Smith.  I am Connie’s son. My wife and I have owned the business since late 2012.

What do you love most about being your own boss? Freedom, at the end of the day you are responsible for your own fate, never liked having to depend on others for work/pay.  30 years ago, Connie’s Cookies was started because my mother was laid off by a large insurance agency, to downsize and save money. I have also been in the same situation in life where you may not be appreciated for what you are worth by your employer,  so in 1998 I started my own business,  Rob’s Transmission, Inc. Polar opposite from cookies,  but learned how to survive and run a small business from the ground up.  Both businesses are doing well today!

What makes Wichita so special? Wichita is special because it is just the right size, not too big and not too small for us to be a unified town, perfect to raise a family.

Have you always wanted to own your own business? No never even gave it a thought, until having worked for several different companies, doing all kinds of jobs, realization, that 1.  I don’t like having a boss, and 2.  employer never really cared about employees and their well being.

For someone visiting Wichita, what is the one must see? If visiting Wichita, of course you need to visit Connie’s Cookies,  but otherwise, Exploration place is a real gem in the center of town,  we have some great golf courses,  Flint Hills National is my favorite,  The new Wichita Sports Forum at K96 and Greenwich is sure to attract many, and don’t forget Rock River Rapids Waterpark in Derby and last but not least Tangynika Wildlife Park in Goddard.

What is your favorite local restaurant? Lately one of our favorite places to eat has been BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse for a night out or El Gordo Mexican Fastfood for a quick bite.

Do you see yourself opening other locations? We have a franchise that we sold years ago in Kansas City, it is independently owned and operated,  It is a possibility that on day we may try a West location.

Why do your customers stay or do repeat business with you? Our customers come back for the original tastes that come from Great Grandma Smithies recipes,  just like a visit to Grandma’s house when we were young.

To what do you attribute your success? Our success has been a result of Grandma’s recipes full of love, dedication, hard work, and the best employees we could ask for.

What do you look for in an employee? Intelligence, honesty, dependability and the desire to work hard and do their best.

What is unique about your business? Our recipes have to be what makes us unique, our signature frosted sugar cookies are unlike anything you can find, reminiscent of going to Grandma’s, we all loved that.

What are your responsibilities as the business owner? As a small business owner, every responsibility may be your at one time or another.  Can’t be afraid to take out the trash, grab a mop or do dishes if need be,  as well as advertising, accounting, management, inventory, you name it,  being a small business owner is anything but easy.

Kind Kravings

KIND KRAVINGS

Wichita, KS area • Check out their Truck SchedulesWebsite

Kind Kravings offers a unique menu that’s sure to make an impression in every bite! They are best known for their dishes that are 100% Natural and GMO-free! They are the go-to of vegans, those who love organic food and those who simply wants great food that’s truly outstanding!

The business is spearheaded by Rochelle Collins who has so much to share about how her business came to be and what her future plans are.

How long have you been in business? Kind Kravings opened Earth Day of 2015 which was roughly 14 months ago.

What do you love most about being your own boss? I have never been one that takes being told what to do at all, so besides the government, owning my own business takes that out of the equation. Mostly, I love that I can impact the world however I see fit, and I like that I am not working for someone else’s bottom dollar at the end of the day. I also believe this country needs to bring back local small businesses because we have handed the power over to corporations and I for one have not appreciated the direction that has taken this country or the planet as a whole.

What makes Wichita so special? Wichita is a blank slate. The fact that there is not much but industrial/manufacturing jobs means there is a market and potential for so much more culture here. I grew up here so besides my travels this is all I know. I like the size of Wichita and it is pretty clean as a city.

Have you always wanted to own your own business? No, I have not. In fact, I never put much thought into what I “wanted” to do per say. I just knew what I DIDN’T want to do which was work for someone else or work a desk job.

For someone visiting Wichita, what is the one must see? The Keeper of The Plains. That is a really cool art piece with good history and meaning.

What is your favorite local restaurant? Passage to India, hands down! I love indian food it is one of my favorite so Passage obviously is on my list, but as far as another rest. that i can get behind on what they are doing and accomplishing it is Beautiful Day Cafe. I love the owners and their business model. They are doing it right with organic farm to table and we support them as much as possible!

Do you see yourself opening other locations? Kind Kravings is just a stepping stool to something much greater. We have no plans to open future locations but more so to expand upon the concept we have already started. We are open to any and all possibilities because that is what makes the future special is anything can happen, but we would ideally like to keep our focus on quality over quantity and multiple locations would likely pull our attention in to many different directions, diluting the experience.

Why do your customers to stay or do repeat business with you? Honestly, this question is pretty deep for me but I can probably sum it up a bit. I think we are in a time and place where people are resonating with the message and the meaning behind Kind Kravings.  We strive to connect with the community on a person to person basis, because each one of us matters and we whole heartedly care about every person we serve, people are NOT a number or a dollar sign.

We aim to make the connection between what we put in our bodies and it’s impact on our health, environment, and animals. I think people are waking up to the importance of a  clean food supply and will logically seek out those providing that. Our food is not processed pre packaged dead food, it is whole foods created by the touch of the human spirit and provided by the earth in its purest form we can find today, which is organic and non gmo.

Of course, we can not leave out one of the most important facts to touch on here and that is our food is simply AMAZING!! There is a reason your grandmother’s cooking was the best, it was made with love from scratch and that is exactly what I had in mind when we decided to open Kind Kravings. We wanted to make home cooked meals readily available or more convenient in our fast paced society because fast food is killing our nation so clearly there is a need for convenience but in a much more healthier and sustainable fashion. Our food is an art form to us. Creating dishes completely from scratch without the use of harmful ingredients and utilizing spices, herbs, seasonings, and cooking techniques to create incredible flavor versus achieving it through the use of high salt, sugar, and fats to do so.

To what do you attribute your success? Besides those in my life like mom, dad, and grandmother who taught me a thing or two about cooking and the importance of the dinner table. Simply following my heart has always been and always will be the path to success because to me it can only be found through happiness and nourishing souls is what makes me feel happy.

What do you look for in an employee? I can tell everything I need to about someone through the way they choose to treat their bodies, the environment, and the innocent/weak (animals, children, elders) If there is a lack of respect in any of those areas you probably won’t be suitable for Kind Kravings mission. We believe in living our truth and those on our team must also do the same.

What is unique about your business? We are a vegan organic non gmo comfort food, food truck in the heart of beef country… need i say more?

What are your responsibilities as the business owner? EVERYTHING! Bookkeeping, social media and internet, inventory, supply purchasing, cooking, serving, menu development, etc. Yes, we are growing and will need to expand on help in the near future because it is a HUGE responsibility.

You can reach us at (316) 302-3992 or email us via our Contact page.

The Popcorner is a success story of a previous employee who persevered really hard to achieve her goals. Kirsten, the owner, was a part-time employee when she was in high school, back when the store’s name was Vic’s Corn Popper. Ten years later, the owners sold the store to her and she re-branded it and made it her own.

With their many different popcorn varieties to choose from, you surely can try something different every single time. Oh and a little tip, you can always ask them for a free sample before you make a purchase. I’m sure you’ll love all their fantastic flavors as much as we did!

We had the opportunity to talk to Kirsten…

How long have you been in business?  I opened the store in October of 2014

What do you love most about being your own boss?  I love that I can exercise my creativity and when I have an idea I can put it into motion.

What makes Wichita so special? I love Wichita because of the midwest charm and we have a great sense of pride.  There is a lot of great things to do in the Wichita area and I really encourage everyone to check out their local businesses for fun new entertainment ideas.

Have you always wanted to own your own business? Yes, since I was 18 I knew I wanted to own my own business after starting my first job at Vic’s Corn Popper.

For someone visiting Wichita, what is the one must see?  Keeper of the Plains and Nifty Nut House

What is your favourite local restaurant? The Anchor, Todd Brians, Wichita Brewing Company

Do you see yourself opening other locations? Yes! We hope to expand to the West side soon.

Why do your customers to stay or do repeat business with you? The Popcorner is a fun place to bring your family or get a unique gift for someone.  We always offer samples and we have a punch card where you can earn free popcorn just by becoming a frequent popper!  We have a new flavor of the week each week starting Sunday, so there is always something new to try!

To what do you attribute your success? I think that true success in business is basic, treat the customers well and they will keep coming back and tell their friends to come visit.

BEAUTIFUL DAY CAFÉ

BEAUTIFUL DAY CAFÉ

2516 E. Central Wichita, KS 67214 • Hours: Monday – Saturday:  7:30 AM – 2:30 PM • Website

Beautiful Day Café is as attractive as its name! It serves seasonal menus which are founded on its organic practices. Fill up your plates with their bounty harvest from their adjacent Permaculture Garden, so you’re sure that you only get the freshest ingredients there is out there.

It’s awesome to have been able to have a glimpse of how the café is being run by its owner, Charolett Knapic…

How long have you been in business? We are celebrating our first birthday June 11th. New cafes are difficult to start and it’s been a whirlwind of activity. My family and friends have helped build this little cafe and lots of volunteers helping to renovate this building and build the garden have made it possible for Beautiful Day to make it.

What do you love most about being your own boss? I like trying out my own ideas to see how they work and I have the tenacity to stick with a project and see it through.

What makes Wichita so special? I’ve lived in the country most of my life and really enjoy it. Since I moved to Wichita, I’ve found that I like my friends that I’ve made here and the people that I serve through Beautiful Day Cafe and Echo Landscapes. Wichita has been very supportive. I also like the gardens and the arts and the music and the dancing and the spiritual support.

Have you always wanted to own your own business? My earliest aspiration was to be a go-go dancer on Hullabaloo but as I got older and raised a family on a farm I started thinking about having a cafe that introduced people to the food that they were eating. Gardens feel good and knowing where your food comes from and who’s growing it makes a connection that our society has moved away from for the sake of convenience and price. We’re finding out that those cheap fixes may fill us up but they don’t nourish our bodies.

For someone visiting Wichita, what is the one must see? I’d send them to Botanica.

What is your favorite local restaurant? I enjoy Bella Luna and Thai Traditions.

Do you see yourself opening other locations? I used to think I might but a cafe has so many details and I think this Beautiful Day Cafe is enough for me.

Why do your customers to stay or do repeat business with you? I think our guests appreciate the quality of food that we serve and many of them have health reasons for coming to us for clean nontoxic food.

To what do you attribute your success? Beautiful Day Cafe’s success is built on a LOT of hard work from many people helping with this dream. It’s a worthy dream but putting it on the planet takes money and planning and family support and friends understanding the project. We’ve had good people devoting their time and talents for less pay than their worth and volunteers that share the dream enough to help out on their own time. Then of course there are our customers that believe in Beautiful Day enough to pay a few extra dollars for the real cost of real food.

What do you look for in an employee? I look for a willingness to listen in employees and direct eye contact, friendliness and an attitude of caring, someone that I would want to be around.

What is unique about your business? Beautiful Day strives to serve clean healthy food that is free of chemicals. We don’t serve the Dirty Dozen list of foods unless they are organic and we source locally when we can. We love our local producers and their families.

What are your responsibilities as the business owner? As the owner, I’m responsible for bills and advertising, filling in when someone can’t show and keeping consistency in our recipes.

What is your favorite quote? Thoughts create things so choose the good ones.

You can reach us at  (316) 977-9333 or through our contact page
